Alluvion Arts @ 414 presents a one-night only performance that integrates visual and performance art in a way you’ve never seen before. In partnership with Up North Pride, this event kicks off Pride Week on September 26th with an evening focused on dismantling the patriarchy to make room for free expression. Inspired by the work of visual artist Winnie van der Rijn, and in collaboration with painter and award winning dancer/choreographer, Peter Sparling. Assisted by five professional dancers from NW Michigan, Sparling conducts a lecture-demonstration that removes van der Rijn’s wearable art from the wall and replaces them with Sparling’s rainbow-colored vestments, banners and murals. Part TED Talk, part catwalk, part improv jam, the performance features dancers Katie Dorn & Leslie Williams, (Interlochen), Finley VanPatten (Crooked Tree/Petoskey), Ben Cheney (Croft Residency/Horton Bay) and Yali Rivlin (Manistee). Double bass player Paul Erhard provides musical commentary.

This event takes place in the second floor lobby of the Commongrounds building and moves inside the Alluvion, also on the second floor. Entry to the event starts at 5:30 with the performance beginning at 6 pm. At the conclusion of the performance, audience members are invited to enjoy light refreshments.

Van der Rijn’s exhibition “And So She Did” is on display August 22nd-September 26th on the second floor of Commongrounds. Van der Rijn is an award winning, multi-disciplinary artist of opportunity–collecting materials, experimenting with techniques and pursuing her curiosities. Her art practice includes textiles, sculpture, collage, actions and collaboration (which she considers its own art form). She actively exhibits her work throughout the United States and abroad. Her most recent body of work ‘How to Dismantle the Patriarchy’ is an examination & deconstruction of the power in menswear.
