During our Listening Sessions in January, we asked community members about their current experiences with Up North Pride and their hopes for the future. We heard from many people that the expanded programming over the last year, especially events targeted toward smaller groups and different interests, has made them feel more connected to our local queer community.
Participants were excited to share ideas for future programs, as well as other organizations and businesses in the community we could partner with. These ideas included things like social sports, practical skill shares and workshops, outdoor events, and programs for kids and families. People expressed hope for more intentional cross-generational community building opportunities, and we heard that when the outside world feels hard and scary, Up North Pride spaces make people feel safe and welcome.
When asked about education and resources that Up North Pride could offer, we heard suggestions in several areas: relationships and sexuality, legal and financial planning, activism and advocacy, and health and wellness. We collected a wide range of suggestions for organizations and individuals we might be able to work with to provide the education people are looking for. Participants also shared a need for a more robust resource directory to help them find local queer friendly businesses and service providers.
While discussing fundraising and sustainability, we acknowledged that all of this programming requires financial support, especially as we look toward the possibility of moving to a new, more permanent community center. We brainstormed ideas for possible funding sources and ways to keep our programs accessible to everyone. Many participants agreed that charging admission for our regular monthly programs creates a financial barrier that would make them less likely to attend. They offered ideas for “pay what you can” systems, as well as opportunities for people to volunteer time or support in other ways to help offset event costs.
The consistent message throughout these sessions was, “This is your Up North Pride.” We exist because of our community, and we want to continue building an organization that you are proud to be a part of. Thank you to everyone who showed up for the listening sessions and filled out our feedback survey. We are looking forward to all the possibilities the next year will bring, and we hope you will continue to help us shape the future of Up North Pride!
Thank you to everyone that participated in our 2025 Community Feedback Survey. The data collected helped get a better understanding of who our audience is, where most of our participants come from and identify, as well as demonstrate what kind of programming is of most interest.
